This hands-on, interactive workshop leads policy writers through the five foundational steps required to organize policies, directives, rules and guidance. Using practical exercises, we will cover what policy writers need to know to be able to draft policy instruments quickly, easily, and raising fewer objections. The result will be rules that are clear, succinct, and respectful, inviting compliance rather than impeding it.

Topics Include:

  • Establishing a policy framework and policy document types
  • Selecting appropriate content
  • Removing overly aggressive language
  • Determining standard elements
  • Identifying common policy writing errors.

Participants leave this workshop knowing:

  • How to determine what belongs in an IM policy instrument and what doesn’t
  • The best way to organize IM policies, directives, standards, and guidelines
  • How to word IM rules in a way that’s respectful to the people affected
  • How to approach a policy renewal exercise.

Registration includes:

  • An electronic copy of the book How to Write Rules That People Want to Follow
  • A Documentation Framework and other working documents to use for policy development
  • A Policy Suite Health Diagnostic checklist
  • A sample policy template
  • A sample Editorial Guide
  • A work plan of policy implementation activities to be completed

This six-hour live online skills training workshop is delivered in three sessions of 2.5 hours each:
Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 9:00 AM PDT (Noon EDT)
Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at 9:00 AM PDT (Noon EDT)
Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 9:00 AM PDT (Noon EDT)

The size of the workshop will be capped at 20 registrants, to ensure plenty of opportunity for individual participation.
